![]() These are some benefits of using Cloud Station as your backup companion. While a few years ago I would be stuck to use bash or some other workaround which would be a pain for me, this is 2019, and PowerShell Core works excellent on Linux systems! I know that installing PowerShell Core for hardcore Linux fans may not be as fun as it is for me, but you do get a lot of benefits from it.Cloud Station is not only a sophisticated cross-platform syncing software, users can use it as a smarter means of backing up their personal computers. The thing is with each new version out I have to do multiple steps to fix every single package from Unifi (you see where I’m going right?). I’ve fixed that, and blogged about it how you can do so using manual steps – Ubuntu 18.04 – Fixing Unifi. Long story short when I upgraded Ubuntu I was suddenly greeted with not working Unifi. The idea is, it works perfectly fine on MongoDB 3.6 but migration between 3.4 to 3.6 is just not straightforward. You see Unifi started to add to their DEB packages that Mongo 3.6 is not supported and therefore blocking any installation. Some time ago I upgraded Ubuntu to 18.04, and things went a bit sideways. It’s great hardware at a great price, and the best thing for a software maniac like me is that it’s continuously updated. I’ve been using Ubiquiti Unifi for some years now, for both home and work usage. Additionally since we've run the script twice there are 2 backups in form of packed content. (which is hostname of the server we've chosen for backup – in script it's defined as ) is created with proper ftp content. In our case after running a script new folder. To verify it's functionality simply press Run and verify it's results. So after we're happy with how the script looks like we can finish creating our task.Īfter pressing OK our task is saved. ![]() It backups current state after the backup is made into dated archive so one can go back in time without much effort. If rerun it compares the content in current folder on Synology with content on ftp and only redownloads the differences. It mirrors current structure of the ftp server as found. This little script does couple of nice things: Tar -zcvf /volume1/SecureBackups/backup-$(date +%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S).tar.gz /volume1/SecureBackups// The first line is doing mirroring of the currently selected FTP Server and putting it's content into /volume1/SecureBackups. The 2nd line is responsible for packing that content into archives providing a go back scenario. On the final tab… this is where the magic happens.Īs the script we've prepared is very short and doesn't require much work you can simply copy/paste it's content into the box I would advise something around 3, where the possibility of internet interruption is the lowest. On next tab you can schedule the times of backup depending on your needs. Choose a proper name for the Task and switch to next tab In our case we wanted to run this on daily basis so we've choosen Scheduled – User-defined script. In the last step we need to configure a new Task in Task Scheduler that is available in Control PanelĬreate new Task by pressing Create and choosing proper option that's suitable for your scenario. With that knowledge in mind we can now setup backup of ftp server to Synology. The important thing now is to find where the folder SecureBackups is actually stored on our Synology. Right click on SecureBackups and choose Properties.Īs you can see below our newly shared directory is available at /volume1/SecureBackups Select proper permissions for the user (in our case Read/Write for admin)Īfter pressing OK newly created share should be available within Synology File Station This step is not really necessary for the backup itself but our Client wanted to have access to his backups from his Mac so he can do verification of content from time to time. In our case it's called SecureBackups and we've enabled Recycle Bin option (although not necessary it comes useful).Īfter pressing OK we're given an option to choose users who will be able to access the Shared Folder (either from Mac or Windows). Pick a name for it according to your prefered standards. To prepare Synology to get files from an ftp server and store it safely on Synology we need to prepare couple of things first.
